How do i recover my password (shown as stars) for an internet site on my phone?

Question:
I have the HTC Hero
and each section of the phone is locked by various different passwords

I signed into my Hotmail account on my phone roughly 5months ago and asked the site to 'remember my password', which it has so i have absolutely no problems getting into my account.
(Since i have been using my phone, push email as made it so i never need the PC.. so i have never entered this password into my hotmail via PC)

But because i have never needed to enter this password, i literally cant remember what it is, but i would like to know it.

The password shows up on the account in my phone as stars (as with any password)

Is there a way of retrieving or recovering this password?

p.s My phone has Android technology, so i can download apps from the market .. could there be an app which could help me retrive it?
Answer:
I don't think there is an app that can do that, is it possible to find it out some other way? Source(s): http://www.omgandroid.com

What does free to £200 mean on a pay monthly phone?

Question:
http://shop.o2.co.uk/mobile_phone/HTC/HD…

Click on the "Select" button and it takes you to the charging information. There you'll see that the phone is free to customers who take up an expensive inclusive plan, but if you pay less each month the phone costs more.

The Smartphone Wars

When you think of smartphone wars you think of the battle between the likes of RIM, Microsoft, Google, and Apple in the ad space. Apple has decided to take the fight one step further. They have filed suit against HTC for Android and WinMobile devices. The Windows mobile devices seem to be unimportant part of the suit for Apple. The majority of the suit is patent claims are against HTC for Android devices. Engadget has a very good breakdown of the patent claims on HTC Android devices and Ars Technica has a good write up on this fight.

The is going to be a very interesting fight. Apple is right to sue because they have to protect their patents, but this feels like a vindictive move. I’ve read the Engadget breakdown of the patents and this seems to be an attack on the Android OS rather then HTC and it’s hardware. it makes one wonder why hasn’t Apple named Google instead of HTC in this suit. It seems Apple is trying to send a message that the smartphone market is theirs and stay out. While this is one sided right now we don’t know what patents HTC has that will back up their position.

When this get this sorted out I wonder how the touch screen phone market is going to be like if Apple is victorious. Most phones out there with a touch screen violate these patents also. On the other side I wonder if there will be fallout for full OSes like Windows as part of the patents are for desktop OSes regarding background applications. In the end I don’t think anything will happen in the OS space, but it is interesting thing to consider.

The most common thing people on both “sides” are complaining about is software patent reform. Which I do agree needs to be fixed, but I’m not a patent expert. Most of these patents Apple is suing for are very common in the phone market now. I wonder how long before other phone manufactures are sued by Apple.

In the short term Google’s Nexus One will still go on sale this year and more Andriod devices will hit carriers. It will take years for this to resolved through the courts. Most of theses patent cases get resolved through settlements. Time will tell if there will be a settlement on HTC’s side.

HTC HD2 breaks free in the T-Mobile USA wilds

HTC’s HD2 is a near perfect combination of physical hardware and silicon that delivers impressive performance on a device that’s surprisingly sleek given the display’s massive 4.3-inch exapanse. Even Microsoft’s much maligned Windows Mobile 6.5 is expertly masked by HTC’s Sense interface. So it’s easy to understand the anticipation felt by the HD2’s first US release, questions of a Windows Phone 7 OS upgrade path notwithstanding. T-Mobile has the release honors and is now showing the HD2 as “coming soon” in its phone inventory. We’ve also got the first “in the wild” shots courtesy of TmoNews showing that big Blockbuster shortcut linked front and center for downloading On Demand movies directly to the device. Still no firm price or date but $199.99 on contract ($449.99 unlocked) sometime around 24 March sounds about right. One more shot with official T-Mobile branding after the break; the rest at the source link below.

Update: Tipster Nigel spotted a “†” footnote to nothing (yet) at the bottom of the page that requires 4 payments of $112.50 (or 20 payments of $22.50). That’s $450, matching the rumored price of the unlocked handset.

What Next in Smartphones?

Ok I admit, we are all sold to the idea of having a smartphone these days! iPhone, Blackberry, Samsung, HTC and others are rapidly bringing out new devices that run smart applications mainly developed by the three leaders, Apple, RIM, and lately Google. News is out that Sony is also joining the ’smartphone club’ by introducing its own version of phone, operating system and apps of course!

Yes we are in a new era of cellphone technologybut whats next?! Are we going to stop right here and keep on improving the smartphones as they exist or we will jump onto a new form of technology platform which may embed artificial intelligence features. Data mining into the cellphone users behavior is the favorite passtime for today’s marketers, mapping our behaviors. Can these internet based smartphones soon provide us with greater usability and more flexible productivity? I think we all can expect something revolutionary in the near future.

Droid Eris 2.1 Leaked

Few weeks ago I mentioned how some of the Droid Eris users were getting Android 2.1 OS update. Some of us began to wonder if the OTA update was finally being delivered to the Droid Eris users. But that wasn’t the case. With Android 2.1 OS OTA around the corner we come across leaked 2.1 OS update. Yesterday an HTC employee in China supposedly posted the ROM on XDA, what he posted was a valid 2.1 OS.

You can follow these directions to get your very own Android 2.1 OS. Follow these simple direction.

You can always go back to the original source for help XDA-Developers

Motorola Droid users you’re in for a surprise too. Phandroid has mentioned that:

Over at DroidLife, Kellex had to do a factory reset on his Droid and used the “fresh start” as an opportunity to test out the Motorola Droid 2.1 Update that had been leaked and posted a few days ago.

You can follow those links and get yourself started on it too.

-=VERY IMPORTANT=-

I highly recommend that you back up everything from your device before performing any of these steps.

A lot of you have been asking if you update your Droid Eris on your own, will you still be able to get the VZWs (Big Red) official Android 2.1 OS push?

The answer is no. If you loaded this IMG file you should not receive the OTA update when Verizon pushes it. Your phone will show that it is already up to date. Unless they change something major you will have to revert back to 1.5 and then wait for the OTA. But with this IMG you should be able to receive any future fixes from Big Red just not the 2.1.

I was going to give this a shot but I think I’ll wait for the official release by VZW. If the Big Red takes forever with the  official push then I’ll just update it myself.

Searching your Desire by using written gestures

Google have announced that it’ll soon be possible to search your Android phone by using written gestures.

The article posted on Google Mobile’s Blog described how spoken queries aren’t always appropriate when out and about for example, so the “Gesture Search” app available for Android 2.0 + should solve this problem if you don’t fancy typing with the keyboard of course…

Gesture Search

Gesture Search - fad or useful? You decide.

Apple May Own the Tech, but Cisco Still Owns "iPhone."

Cisco v. Apple

What's in a name? That which we call a "rose," by any other name would have as many buttons.

Kinda sucks when other people take your shit, huh, Apple? Cisco could have told you that, and did back in 2007 when you stole the name of their trademarked product. In a way, you set the precedent for how the cell phone arms race was going to go when you pulled a fast one on former partner Cisco. The only thing funnier than this coming around to bite you in the ass with HTC is the fact that The Slippery Brick page, where I first caught wind of this story, that was posted back in 2007, now looks like this:

or Ha! Look who owns AdSense!

Highlighted in red, for your amusement, actual irony.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Apple is extremely innovative and they did certainly set the precedent for the modern technological shift, but unless the 20 component patents can be found to be identical in the system used in the Nexus One, this suits going bye-bye faster than the Cisco trademark suit. It would like HP suing Dell for infringing on a particular PC set-up. However, these charges and allegations are a major slap in the face to Google, which if the suit does in fact go through would lose them the right to sell their first step into the tactile US market (every single other product they distribute, save merchandise, is virtual). This would be detrimental to the procession of Google’s plan to take over the world. If that happens we’ll just have to wait for the fiber optics network that gets everyone speeding around the Intertubes one-hundred times faster than we’re currently doing, even on broadband speeds, then connect our paltry iPads to Google’s infrastructure. If Google doesn’t release their own net-tablet by then, of course, operating on Chrome OS.

Here’s the thing, if I am going to be totally frank on the subject of patent infringement: I don’t want Apple to win this lawsuit. As Cracked columnist, Robert Evans, points out here, Apple is super proprietary, and insists that they need to sell devices with certain amounts of GB for memory, when if they’d just install a USB port, the memory would be limitless. How do I know they’re shitting me when they don’t put one in? Because my shitty two-year-old cell phone has a USB port – a USB mini, which last I checked is just as good as any standard-sized USB 2.0.  This is a capitalistic country, and at that, a technologically advanced country, so to create a monopoly on the next wave of tech is not only a bad idea, it also happens to be unlawful here. This is why I think that Steve Jobs is going to either see this through court and  possibly (probably?) fail, or maybe try and getting HTC into a settlement, because I’d sort of  surprised if Apple takes the cake on this one.

AT&T Picking Up HTC Desire, Sprint Getting HTC Legend!!!??

According to BGR, AT&T will be picking up the HTC Desire and it should be on shelves anywhere from May to June! This is great news for AT&T users wanting a big boy Android device. The Backflip is nice, but it is no HTC Desire. On the other side of the carrier battle, Sprint is said to be picking up the unibody sexiness of the HTC Legend and calling it the Hero 2. We don’t have a time frame for the Legend/Hero 2, so not sure if it will hit in fall like the original HTC Hero, or if it will drop in the summer. Either way this is great news for Android fans on both carriers!

HTC Magic vs. iPhone

First, let me start off by saying : I am not a geek. At best, I am a GBA (Geek By Association). Up until I met my girlfriend (about 2,5 years ago) I guess you could say I sorta knew my way around the internet, I knew the concept of chatting and did so intensively, I had a cellphone I used a lot and I guess that’s about it. And then I met my über-geek girlfriend…

She convinced me to take it a step further : I bought an iPhone 3G and a MacBook Pro, created a Facebook, Myspace, Flickr and Twitter account and even attended some geek events. But being the über-geek that she is, that was not enough of course. So two weeks ago, she found herself a new challenge : make me use an android cellphone (the HTC Magic with android 1.5 to be exact) instead of my beloved and familiar iPhone.

Now I barely knew what “Android” meant, exept that “you could do more with it” and that Apple “was a closed system” (Remember, i.am.not.a.geek) But hey, since I do like gadgets I didn’t mind giving it a try. I mean, at my age, why not try something new, try to evolve and become one of the hip geeks ? I thought it was my task to be critical but apparently my girlfriend didn’t share my opinion : it lasted about a week before she practically MADE me go back to my iPhone because she was going crazy over all my questions and comments.

Looking back on that week, here is what I can say about HTC Magic vs iPhone :

The HTC hardware definitely sucks big time compared to the smooth iPhone. I already had a HTC Touch from work which I didn’t like and my hopes that the HTC Magic would be different disappeared as soon as I tried to post my first tweet. I felt that the touch screen of the HTC Touch and HTC Magic were a lot less responsive than my iPhone’s. It took about 3-4 taps before a letter actually appeared on screen.

On the software side I immediately missed the little looking glass from the iPhone which appears when you press and hold in a text. Sure, you can use the trackball on the HTC but it doesn’t work as smoothly as on the iPhone. Another minus for me were the apps : my girlfriend installed two facebook apps on the HTC and they both sucked compared the one on my iPhone.

For example : neither one of them could upload pics. I had to go to the pic itself and then send that one to Facebook. I know this was mostly Facebook’s responsibility since they were the ones developing the app but it still affects my opinion on Android since i don’t have the same functionality. However, a big plus for these apps was the functionality of being able to upload pictures from the media gallery immediately with comments.

Although the camera on the HTC seemed promising with its the 3.2 megapixels, the quality of the pics was less compared to the ones taken with my iPhone, especially pics taken during the evening or in places where the light isn’t very bright. But it wasn’t all bad of course ;) There are some advantages using Android as well.

One of the major ones is the fact that apps can run in the background. I find this a big minus on the part of the iPhone that for example, every time I switch from webradio to, lets say Twitter, the music stops playing. I don’t understand why Apple doesn’t do something about that ? Same goes for the inability to load Flash on the iPhone by the way, which the custom Android ROM my girlfriend installed does perfectly. However, apps running in the background can really drain your battery, especially when you sometimes forget about half of them.

Conclusion : After one week I went back to my iPhone and have never been happier with it. Maybe I didn’t give Android enough time to get used to it and thoroughly use and discover all the possibilities. Or maybe it was because of the HTC hardware that I didn’t like it and maybe I would enjoy Android better on another cellphone ? Who knows ..

Either way, I do think Android and low tech geeks are a difficult match at this point. But maybe if with every new iPhone, the “wow”’s get less and less as they do for me nowadays and the apps for Android improve, my opinion will change and Android will become my “new iPhone” experience ;) My girlfriend is already saying she wants me to try the Palm Pre so i’m sure another review will follow soon. Stay tuned ;)

HTC Touch2 with a difference

Consistency in quality features is what we expect from any good handset and HTC Touch2 is just the same. Whether it is the LCD screen of the phone or the Window Mobile OS, everything is special about this phone. The consistency can be seen even in the network coverage and battery support.

Features of HTC Touch2:

HTC Touch2

  • Right from the basic measurements of the phone to its features, everything about the phone is high class. The basic measurements of the handset are 10.4cm by 1.29cm by 5.5cm and even when the batteries are fitted in the phone, it weighs only 110grams.
  • The 2.8 inches wide screen of the phone is touch type and the LCD screen offers sixty five thousands colours other than the high screen resolution because of which viewing the photographs and videos become highly enjoyable.
  • The phone comprises of a perfect battery support of 6 hours in GSM network. The processor of the phone is Qualcomm and the operating system is Window Mobile of version 6.5. Nothing better can be expected from the phone.
  • The handset also comes with the facility of memory card slot to expand the internal memory. However, the basic memory capacity is also good enough in the phone. There is a RAM of 256MB and ROM of 512MB.
  • There is the facility of GPS navigation which works as a tool to find directions. The phone has WiFil WLAN connectivity to internet whose speed becomes fast owing to the 3G HSDPA technology.

T-Mobile gives an HTC HD2 reminder, now with more fun!

As promised, T-Mobile announced new features for the HD2 at Mobile World Congress today and I’ve gotta say, it isn’t all that thrilling.
If you’ve ever held the HD2 in your hands as I have (jealous much?), you’ll notice that the screen is unusually huge and vivid. The 4.3-inch WVGA display is perfect for games and movies. Coupled with Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor, this phone has a lot of multimedia potential. So that’s exactly what T-Mobile is doing — pumping up the media and fun.
The HD2 will come with Blockbuster On Demand so you can download videos wherever you are, and you’ll also be able to view that content on your TV, Blu-ray player and PC with Blockbuster software. To get the ball rolling, the HD2 will come pre-loaded with “Transformers” and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” right on the 16GB memory card.
Goodies thrown into the package are MobiTV, free Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi for up to six months, and Barnes & Noble’s e-Reader app. Did I say this device wasn’t that thrilling? I take that back. The only reason not to get one of these bad boys is if you have a serious aversion to Windows Mobile, especially with Windows Phone 7 coming later this year. Otherwise, if you find yourself drooling over this phone’s features, you’ll be waiting in anticipation until an official release date is announced.

T-Mobile's HD2 to get Windows Phone 7?

T-Mobile opted to give the world a tease just a few days before MWC. On T-Mobile’s Twitter account, they ask, “If you think you know the HD2? Well if you think you do, think again.” So what does this all mean? Here is what we know. The HD 2 is supposed to launch on T-Mobile USA some time in March, it already has Windows Phone 6.5, and was rumored to get 6.5.3 soon. We saw the HD 2 for the States received a bit of a spec bump over the European version, so we don’t think the hardware will be too much different from what we have already seen. If T-Mobile is not refering to Windows Phone 6.5.3, could they be referring to Windows Phone 7? MWC’s Windows Phone 7 clamoring is steadily increasing and if there is any Windows Phone device with specs that can handle Windows Phone 7, it would be the HD2. We will keep our fingers crossed in hopes that this is the case. We also will continue to let everyone know what Windows Phone 7 is as it unfolds.

HTC Touch HD2 - the high quality phone

A handset should have beautiful casing and a stylish phone but what is more important is high quality features. HTC Touch HD2 is a perfect phone as it has both the specifications to offer its users. Not only it has a sleek black body and a 3.8 inches wide touch screen to enhance its appearance but also outstanding features in terms of network, roaming facilities, data and communication features and connectivity.

Let’s take a better look at the features of the HTC Touch HD2:

HTC Touch HD2

  • The touch screen of the phone measures 3.8 inches and offers resolution of 480 by 800 pixels. Nothing can match up to the WVGA LCD flat screen of the phone which has a TouchFlo user interface of three dimensions. Whether it is about finger controls or auto rotate screen, the phone has it all.
  • The HTC Touch HD2 phone has a measurement of 62.8mm by 12mm by 115mm. this highly sleek phone is though a bit on the heavier side and weighs 147 grams.
  • The processor of the phone is Qualcomm as expected. The high technology driven phone works upon 3G HSDPA technology and hence video calling, conferencing and fast internet connections are possible through the phone.
  • The phone also has WLAN WiFi facility other than the Bluetooth, USB port, EDGE technology and GPRS. The phone comprises of inbuilt memory of 512MB and 288MB of RAM is also there.
  • Then additionally there is a memory card slot also. 8 hours of GSM talk time is what the battery of the phone provides when completely charged and the user can expect four hundred and forty hours of time in the standby mode.

The HTC Touch HD2 phone has network coverage of quad bands of GSM network and 3G HSDPA 2100. There is also the presence of GPS navigation feature along with Google Maps for those who want to locate directions even when abroad. There is also the facility of FM radio for entertainment in the phone along with music player with touch screen controls. HTC Legend Spotted in the Wild.

Photobucket

A real life Shot of the HTC legend was rounded up today by the nice People down at Endgadget. The Legend seems to be going for a new style here as it looks. Visually I see, Bold, and simple. The Home Button it looks like the only button on the front of the Device, making it very clear that HTC was going for simplicity and cleanliness just like our parents wanted our rooms right?
As you can see on the rear the Bold HTC logo, camera with LED Flash. This is a Pre Production model and is made of an aluminum material.
This is all we have on HTC’s legend. Stay tuned and you shall be updated.

HTC HD2 Gets In On the Kickstand Craze That's Sweeping the Nation [Kickstands]

Kickstands are enjoying something of a renaissance lately as tablets have jumped to the forefront of everyone’s attention, so it’s only natural that the HD2, the most tabletesque of smartphones, is getting a combination kickstand/battery pack of its own. The battery definitely adds some bulk to the skinny HD2, but if you’re looking to take advantage of its 800×480 screen to do some video-watching on the go, then an extended battery and a sweet kickstand are two things that could suit you well. Taking part in the zeitgeist will only cost you £41.11 when the battery pack is available in March. [Cool Smart Phone via Engadget]

Finally 1.6

Whew. If providers and/or HTC can’t do a decent job themselves, I’l have to take matters into my own hands. Thanks to a couple handy guides on the net, I now have a HTC Dream with Android 1.6. Google Goggles, here I come.

It’s really so much better now. And I didn’t even get any crashes or errors during the installation. Yes, it was long and difficult (I’m not a tech wiz, and those guides are a bit confusing at times – I had to follow three different ones to get all the info I needed), but at least I now have unlocked the full potential in my phone. Now if only I could do something about the battery… maybe I should get that 1700mha.

Whats better for me? palm pre or htc hero?

Question:
my mom is gonna buy me a cellphone soon and i want both the palm pre&the htc hero but which one? the pre has flash but no video and the hero has video recorder bit no flash but its android and ugh!!!!
Answer:
The Hero will have full flash support within a couple of months, as soon as Android 2.1 is released for it.

The Pre is not doing well in sales, and I doubt Palm will be around in 3 or 4 years to be honest.

The Pre also feels "cheaply made" compared to the Hero.

Where's my charger?

If you own an Android phone, particularly the HTC Hero, you’ve probably dealt with less than stellar battery life.  Initially mine was so short it was almost a deal breaker.  So instead of griping at Sprint or HTC, I went to the net and “googled” it.  Turns out I wasnt alone LOL  After perusing several different solutions, this is what I did:

  1. replaced the stock sms app with a 3rd party app. I chose Handcent SMS but I’m told ChompSMS is just as good.
  2. disable notifications in the stock sms app.

Appaprently the problem is that the stock SMS app isnt allowing the phone to “sleep” causing excessive battery drain.  I did the fix, and so far my battery life has increased drastically.  Still not up to where it should be IMO, but much better than it was out of the box.  The rumor is that the 2.1 update will address the issue.

If you have further questions, check out this thread http://androidforums.com/sprint-htc-hero/11699-spint-hero-battery-issues-known-fix-fix-charges-faster-lasts-longer.html at androidforums.com.

Which phone should I buy?

Question:
I am very confused about mobile phones, there are so many I wish I could customize them.
my options are

Nokia N900
Iphone
Sony ericsson satio
Sony ericsson aino
HTC HD2

I know I might get more confused after your answers ! Before anybody asks, I dont care about money I spend, All I care about the music, touchscreen and videos + the features. (Iphone has it all but does not have a good camera which i dont like about it )
Answer:
Modern times are looking at the software features and contents more than a phone's physical abilities.
Here is my take on the phone models you've listed:-

1. Sony Ericsson (great camera output & music abilities)
2. HTC (intelligent design, feel; linux driven - major plus)
3. Nokia (user friendly, cheaper alternative to Apple)
4. Iphone (large plethora of downloadable applications) Source(s): Software Developer for Mobile Market.

Amazon Announces Sweeping Kindle Changes (The Timing is Just Coincidental)

I have heard it said, “If you can’t compete, sue.” Of course, I’m sure that’s not the case with Nokia’s recent complaint against Apple. Sure, it could have started litigation back in 2007 when the iPhone was first launched, but I guess the almost-three-year-delay was just how long it took getting its lawyers to agree on the wording. Or the letterhead. Or something.

Amazon, on the other hand, is doing the exact opposite and choosing to Compete with a capital C. This week it has floated a boat-load of announcements around its Kindle e-book reader device and platform. Now, stop being cynical, I’m sure the timing has nothing to do with the imminent unveiling of Apple’s mythical Tablet.

In January alone Amazon has introduced the Kindle DX to over one hundred countries with Global Wireless, expanded the Kindle Digital Text Platform to both publishers and individuals (allowing independent authors to publish and sell their work without a contract with a publishing house), amended its revenue sharing policy (effectively enabling authors to earn higher royalties) and, yesterday, announced a Kindle Development Kit which will allow developers to build “active content” for the Kindle.

This last announcement means that apps from developers like Handmark (a restaurant reviews guide), Sonic Boom and EA Mobile (games) will one day be available on the Kindle in all their digital ink glory. The Kindle’s slow refresh rate and low-resolution, greyscale e-ink display suggests sudoku-style or word puzzle games will be the most likely apps for that platform. Canabalt fans should look elsewhere.

Love Your Kindle, or Your Money Back

Not since Victor Kiam fell in love with his Remington electric razor has a company dared to offer complete refunds based on a customer’s sense of satisfaction. But that’s exactly what Amazon is doing.

Related GigaOM Pro Research: Evolution of the e-Book Market

Amazon’s Kindle-marketing-blitz continues. According to TechCrunch, customers buying an obscenely huge number of books from Amazon on a regular basis have started receiving a remarkable email invitation; if they buy a Kindle before January 26 and don’t experience Victor Kiam levels of satisfaction, they get their money back. Every penny of it. Oh yeah — and they can keep the Kindle, too.

Going on the Offensive

Expanding into new markets, lowering prices, producing developer kits & app stores and offering free Kindles to unsatisfied (or just mildly-indifferent) customers speaks volumes about how threatened Amazon feels by Apple’s tablet.

It is remarkable that a device we still don’t know actually exists is having such a measurable effect in the technology world. The media are falling all over themselves to fill column inches (virtual and dead-tree varieties) with breathless speculation and debate over screen sizes or front-facing cameras. Meanwhile, every tech company on the planet seems to have launched their very own tablet at this year’s CES. Even Microsoft couldn’t resist the temptation to jump up and down shouting “Me, too!” as Ballmer showed off HP’s lackluster prototype during his keynote.

Now Amazon is doing marketing and promotion somersaults to get their Kindle message heard over the din.

The sad thing, of course, is that no matter how hard Amazon tries, their efforts will be in vain. Assuming, of course, the rumors are accurate and Apple’s tablet will revolutionize e-book/magazine reading, nothing the Kindle does at this stage can make the tiniest bit of difference. The world is waiting for the Tablet because, despite so many conflicting rumours over the last few months, the general consensus seems to be that Apple’s Tablet will crush all the competition.

In due course, we’ll find ourselves where we are today with the iPhone; in the same way every new smartphone is compared less-than-favorably with the iPhone, so it will be with tablet devices. Predictable phrases like “Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s Tablet” or fanboy-baiting headlines like “HTC Launches THE Tablet Killer” will appear in popular publications and generate the usual Comment Flame Wars in the leading tech blogs. And in the meantime, everyone will forget the Amazon Kindle with its author-friendly royalty rates and digital-ink word games.

How Will Apple Do It?

The Kindle might have fared better had Amazon not delayed its rollout so markedly. In its early years the Kindle was available in only a select few markets (for a long time North America only) and even since its recent expansion to over a hundred countries, content availability has proven somewhat patchy. That’s not Amazon’s fault, but the precarious distribution rights of major publishing houses across different territories. If Amazon had released the Kindle sooner, and in more markets, rather than setting sights on North America only, it’s possible some of the more chewy worldwide licensing issues faced by publishers might have been worked out earlier in the game, thus cementing public perception of the Kindle as the e-book reader of choice. But they didn’t.

This thorny issue of content rights plagues all publishers and distributors everywhere, so it will be deeply interesting to see how Apple tackles these problems if (when) it starts selling books and magazines in the iTunes store.

And so here we are today, on the eve of Apple’s bound-to-be-historic tablet launch, witness to Amazon’s last desperate thrashing attempts to remind the world that they have this Kindle thingy. Only, I don’t think the world can hear them.

The Week. #3

The Week. #3. This week’s “The Graphics” is a quoted text from Signalnoise.com for Haiti earthquake. Updates every Saturday (Click image to read full post, works like that every week).

The graphics

Signalnosie for Haiti – Graphics for a cause.

The republic of Haiti was hit with a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on Tuesday, January 12th. Most of the necessities of life, such as food, shelter and water have been reduced to near nothing and the poor country is now struggling with rescue efforts and the dispersal of much-needed supplies and aid. They have very little to work with.
For the next week, artists like Chuck Anderson are donating all money they make from selling their wares to the disaster relief fund to help Haiti, and Signalnoise will be doing the same. 100% of sales from the Signalnoise Store for the next week will be donated directly in support of Haiti. Please note, all posters will be shipped out early to mid next week.
Big thanks to the following for their orders and support:
Ramon Thompson
, Andreas Ellwanger
, Emilio Bellu
, Brandy Byrd
, Franz Jeitz
, The Remakers
, Luke Desroches
, Allison McCarthy
It’s easy to feel separated from things like this based on geography, but it doesn’t mean we’re not all in this together. Every bit counts. My heart goes out to you, Haiti. Link -> http://blog.signalnoise.com/2010/01/14/signalnoise-for-haiti/

The technology

Poken

Poken is an “online identity card”. Identities like Facebook account, Instant messaging accounts and your other identities of the numerous social networks you belong to can be stored in the Poken. Simply “high five” your Poken with another to transfer this data, a green light shows after a successful transfer. The appearance is available in many many variations, from Frankensteins to the limited edition Obama. Go get yours today. But.. there is one catch. The Poken is not that famous worldwide yet so it might not be as useful in the coming months. Link -> http://www.findapoken.com/

The fashion

Reebok PUMP

It’s the 20th anniversary for the Reebok PUMP technology. Started in 1989/90, the Pump was a pair of basketball shoes. It was phenomenal just by the fact that it allows users to inflate the tongue of the shoe, enabling a tighter and more customized fit. Later on becoming a pair shoes for tennis, and general exercise. In 1994, Reebok launched the Instapump fury, for running purpose. A pair of lace-less shoes using purely the inflatable tongue to keep the athletes’ foot inlace. There are now a vast range of the PUMP to choose from, from size to usage to appearance. Link -> http://www.pump20.com/

The extra

Vengeance – Johnnie To

Trailer -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaGDH95M8WY

One amazing movie. From Hong Kong Director Johnnie To, screenplay by Wai Ka-Fai. A French and Hong Kong co-production. French actor Johnny Hallyday , Hong Kong actors Simon Yam , Anthony Wong and other actors, all famous for crime/action movies. Beautiful cinematography and editing. An amazing yet simple idea for the script brings out the idea of vengeance and a series of questions.. is revenge necessary, why hatred.. “Vengeance competed for the prestigious Palme D’Or award at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival” Definitely a must to watch!! Will the HTC Legend Replace the HTC Hero?

Since the leaked Android 2.1 ROM gave us a clue on the upcoming devices from HTC, we cannot stop thinking about all those new HTC smartphones coming down the pike. It appears we are not the only ones, the good folks over at ai.rs blog got a hold of this image below; the HTC Legend.

The image above gives you a better idea on how this new Android phone will look like. Many people believe the HTC Legend will be the successor to the popular HTC Hero, this is in part to the Legend’s screen size and resolution, which matches that of the Hero; 3.2-inches and HVGA but in the case of the Legend, it has a beautiful AMOLED display instead.

The processor on the Legend will have only 600Mhz, which is a little disappointing for speed junkies, but enough for mainstream users. Now, the hard thing is to decide which Android phone to get next year. Will you prefer this smartphone, or the HTC Bravo ?

Google reportedly planning to launch its own mobile

Google reportedly hopes to strengthen its presence in the world of mobile telephony with plans to introduce its own high-tech phone sometime in 2010, according to press reports.

Reports by the Wall Street Journal and other outlets cite sources close to Google stating that the company, known primarily for its online search functions, is expected to release a phone dubbed Nexus One that runs Google’s Android operating system.

However, the company hopes to sell the phone directly to consumers, skipping mobile service providers, which often package their services with hardware from other companies. That means customers will either have to use their existing mobile phone contract with the Nexus or arrange for a new one.

The new phones will reportedly be manufactured by Taiwanese phone maker HTC, reported TechCrunch, a technology blog. HTC already produces several phones that use Android.

With Google in the lead, the two companies developed Android, which relies primarily on Google’s online services for mobile internet functions. However, until now, Google has always relied on other companies, like HTC, Samsung or Motorola, to provide network support and hardware.

Google recently reported in a blog entry that it was letting some of its employees test a new mobile device, but provided no further details. The company is seen by many to be one of the up-and-coming players in the mobile phone market. Google believes it can leverage its strong position in online advertising to similar strengths within the mobile market.
